Meet Emmy

Emmy (they/them) is the owner and designer of Ember Mischief (previously Inky Fox the Yarn Bandit).
Chicano. Queer. Fiber Artist. Writer. Witch. Disabled.
The warm cup of tea energy that honestly might put you to sleep.
Crocheter for over 20 years, Emmy has continually experimented and played with crochet, yarn and fibers to create an incredibly personal style in all their creations. Adding texture and magic to your life, your practice, and engaging the structures of your foundations.Emmy is open to collaboration inquiries, commissions for companies and magazines; ready to tackle the next magical challenge. Projects that most align with Emmy center underrepresented groups; Black and Indigenous creators take precedence. They will not work with companies that have not showcased an ongoing support to Queer, Black and Indigenous spaces and their projects.Email requests to [email protected]

Current Projects

OnGoing

Currently, Emmy has staken a step back from creating and releasing patterns for Ember Mischief. This comes after years of hustle and burnout. In addition to their disability, running the business has become unmaintainable.
They still craft and crochet, but it has become a means of truly honoring their love for their roots and as a reminder that in our society, not everything needs to be a hustle.
You can now find all patterns as a free or pay what you like model. Emmy prefers to open their work to those who wish to just enjoy crochet.
They know their art is worth paying for, however, it brings no fulfillment at this time to charge for those patterns.
If you wish to support Emmy, they would rather you use the tip feature on Ko-fi. Pass along their patterns by tagging them. And if you fancy a good monster romance, read their novel Threads of Awakening (also free) and post a review.

Past Projects

shadow work

Being upfront and honest in the complacency of the systems we upheld is important in healing and moving forward. That said. Yes, I have two patterns in my first ever publication, "Harry Potter: Crochet Wizardry | The Official Harry Potter Crochet Pattern Book by Lee Sartori". My Fawkes the Phoenix pattern is showcased on the cover, and my second pattern: Hedwig the Owl are both prominent additions to this book. At the time I was contracted to offer patterns, JK Rowling's behavior was undetermined, her money and the Harry Potter IP were not used for her transphobic beliefs. By the release of the book, I wanted nothing to do with Harry Potter, this pattern book and promptly pulled down all Harry Potter patterns prior to this.
I do not stand by her beliefs and do not promote the book in any way, shape, or form. As a trans person, as an artist that fully understands the impact of my art is intricately connected to me and who I am, and as someone who is actively pushing back against the narratives of hate-- I vehemently refuse to further line her pockets that directly harms my trans siblings.

Other previous publications

Previously Emmy has been featured with Yarn Punk, Gregory Stitch, Esnueil, Nyybeats (Twitch DJ), MrsDrLupo, and Sabotage Studio.

Digging deeper

the fun stuff

Emmy Scanga was born and raised in Colorado. Always connected to the outdoors and the world around them, they began crafting tales of the spirits, animals and people that inhabited their imagination. Their grandmother, matriarch of their family, instilled their Chicano culture through stories, fiber crafts, and food. Many of the tales you see in the Threads of Fate series were retellings by their abuelita.Like many Chicanos, our roots are muddled, shrouded in fear, colonialism and assimilation. Emmy strives to honor their culture, embrace the accent, spanglish, food of the southwest that undoubtedly is the result of cultures intertwining with the local Indigenous nations of the Four Corners area. Though blurry, Emmy is working to decolonize, honor and respect the people that have long been here, claiming no first nation indigeny. Yes, their family has been here for generations but when and where their Mexican heritage originated has been lost with the elders of the family that have passed on.Beyond their desire to heal, challenge the ugly sides of their own culture, and advocate for their disability, they hope that you find the love, connection and representation of the most vulnerable communities within the pages of their stories.Emmy (they/them) is a non binary Chicano author who has led a life of creativity in many fields. From a craft filled childhood in Colorado, Emmy recently stepped away from designing and writing crochet patterns to finally pursue writing to life a world that has been building since 2001. Aiming to pay homage to their late abuelita (grandmother), Emmy taps into their love for all things mystical, haunting and those subjects hidden within the lives we live. Pushing for more representation of those around them, all of these stories are written to showcase not just their Chicano roots, but Indigenous, Black and gay siblings.Emmy currently lives in New England with their partner Joe and void cat River Tam. You can find Emmy often crocheting, weaving, playing games and furthering decolonizing their personal witchcraft.
